Oirbo devlog #51 - UI done!

(Posted originally on our blog)

Hi guys!

After ending the character menu there were only two pieces of UI missing, the death screen and the pause menu.

Starting off with the pause menu, since it's a little simpler:

Visually, it's simple and clear, the icons are nowhere near final assets, but they do send the message. Resume, Settings and Quit, the usual options on any pause menu. Unlike the character menu, the pause menu does stop the entire game as you can see with the MineRobo stopping when the menu appears.

Now for the death screen, things got a little more complex, let's see it in action:

There are 3 main components of the death screen, inventory lost, stats and the map. The lost inventory will appear on the top bar, in the gif above you can see that 1 Health Cell (wrong icon in there) and 1 button pushed were lost when you died.

The stats are in the top right, with the time of " this version" and the distance traveled and the version counter in the center.

Finally, the map, it will fade the covered area in this version, and reset any hidden section discovered (as seen on the gif above).

The death screen, besides being a nice thing to see while we reload the level in the background it also helps us enforce the idea that each Oirbo is a unique entity and when one dies everything it learned and discovered along the way is lost. Of course, if you get to an assembly pod before dying all your discoveries will be saved in the system and reloaded.

There are still a few visual effects that we need to fix, like the map not fading nicely and the hidden sections just popping up out of nowhere.

Still, we finally have a working UI in the game, which makes it feels like a totally different thing to be honest, as we implemented the UI the game started to feel more like a game for every screen we completed and now we can finally focus on the medical area, after fixing this small issues of course.
