Oirbo devlog #53 - Medical Area: First Section, New Stuff

(Posted originally on our blog)

Hi guys

After almost 3 months of tightening loose ends, we finally are making new content for Oirbo \o/. We are still getting started and the new Medical area (it will be huge) but we at least got the first 42 screens done \o/.

To put in perspective, this is the planned size for the medical area:

You probably noticed those green painted sections, those are for our latest Oirbo mechanic Astral Oirbo:

Astral Oirbo, places you controlling Oirbo main energy cell, and as expected it's super brittle and if you touch anything else besides the Astral Pods (those white boxes on the gif above, dev art FTW) it will damage you. So touching a wall will make oirbo energy cell automatically be teleported back to the initial Astral Pod and it will lose 1/3 of an energy cell. But if you touch spikes or lasers inside the Astral Tubes (the sections where you can only traverse with the Astral Form) you will lose 2 energy cells. So when you get into it, remember to be careful with Oirbo xD.

Explanations aside, this little mechanic was super fun to create and it's a great way to break the usual platforming sections into something more challenging, especially because the player only controls the Astral form direction, not its forward momentum.

The entire section is shown above, its main purpose is to serve as a little tutorial to the whole mechanic because it will also be used on the remaining sections. So to avoid delivering too much info, we reused the enemy set of the first area to serve as minor obstacles and for health recovery (remember each enemy killed drops an energy cell that replenishes 1/3 of Oirbo energy cell).

From here on out we will start implementing the medical area exclusive mechanics, starting off with the much-dreaded anesthesiologist (more on it soon), then the new medical area lasers, and it's special follower enemies.

This week main goals are to finish the mechanic implementation of the anesthesiologist and the life requiring button which will be the button mechanic for the area, more on it (hopefully) next week :D

Now to end this devlog, we've been taking daily screenshots of the area as we build it, so we will include the progress of the area on each devlog from now on XD.

What do you guys think of the new Astral Oirbo? We really enjoyed our time working on it, and the feeling of playing it is super fresh considering the rest of Oirbo gameplay, let us know your thoughts on the comments or reach out directly to us on our Discord Server or Twitter ;)

PS: Don't forget to wishlist us on Steam too!
